FIS Projects: FELINE BETA & SOURCE Posted on 18 September 2026 FELINE BETA and SOURCE have officially begun: two new research projects at the Department of Veterinary Sciences of the University of Pisa, funded by the Italian Science Fund and coordinated respectively by Dr Francesca Parisi and Dr Lucia De Marchi. FELINE BETA The project aims to investigate the presence of a betaretrovirus in cats and its potential role in the development of certain diseases through a multidisciplinary approach. As part of the project, samples from mammary tumours, inflammatory liver diseases and various biological matrices will be examined, with the aim of detecting and characterising viral sequences, assessing viral biological activity, investigating virus–host interactions and exploring potential pathogenic mechanisms. The research programme also aims to optimise innovative, standardised and shareable methods for virus detection. The expected results may help expand knowledge of feline pathology, opening up new perspectives for animal health and One Health research. SOURCE The project promotes the development of more sustainable and safer aquaculture systems, in line with the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal and ecosystem health. The initiative addresses the challenges associated with intensive aquaculture, such as declining water quality, infections and antibiotic use, by proposing natural and sustainable alternatives based on organic feed additives, such as essential oils and bioactive compounds. Through multidisciplinary studies on fish and shellfish species, the project assesses the efficacy, safety and environmental effects of these solutions, with the aim of reducing ecological impact and combating antimicrobial resistance, thereby contributing to a more responsible and innovative model of marine food production.
